As a 60-something female, Kate Swanson is well aware of the challenges facing women throughout their life in health, beauty, and fashion.
Makeup for older women

When we're young we barely need makeup to look adept, simply when we get quondam and demand the camouflage more than ever, information technology sometimes seems impossible to find a foundation that's upward to the job! But don't despair, information technology is possible to notice makeup that works for mature pare. Information technology'due south all nigh good preparation, choosing the correct products, and applying them with subtlety.

Lose the Powder!
Most of u.s.a. grew upwards using powder cosmetics. Those born in the '40s may use pressed powder instead of foundation; baby boomers were taught to set their liquid foundation with translucent powder, and nearly all of united states of america accept used pulverization blush. The latest craze for mineral pulverization foundations has sucked in a few of us, too, with the hope of better peel.
Unfortunately, powder—even mineral powder—is unflattering to most mature women, for ii reasons:
1. Matte Means Apartment
When we're young, our skin has a natural glow. In hot atmospheric condition or if we have oily skin, that glow tin go out of manus, so powder is useful. Yet, most women find their skin dries out after l, so there's less need to mattify.
The glow of youth diminishes, so now nosotros need to enhance it, non hide it! Powder hides any remaining sheen we have and tin requite a flat, lifeless look.
2. Facial Pilus
The other thing to lookout man for is the event of pulverisation on fine, downy facial hair. Pulverisation clings to the hairs and makes them far more obvious, peculiarly in bright light.
This problem is rarely mentioned by beauty writers, so I was gratified to see a recent Vogue review of a new mineral powder foundation. The writer raved about how swell it was, then added, "however powder foundations are not recommended if you have facial down."
light-reflected pulverisation

Light-Reflecting Foundations Equals Wrinkles!
If powder is too matte, then mayhap the new "light-reflecting" foundations and highlighters are the respond? These products are often marketed to mature women, as a way of reclaiming a youthful glow. Unfortunately, they accept their downside on lined skin, as well.
Put a light-reflecting foundation or highlighter on a wrinkled expanse, and light volition reverberate off the peaks but not in the troughs—making your wrinkles stand out even more! The same applies to foundations or highlighters that are pearlised.
Many mineral pulverisation foundations fall into this category equally they often contain mica or other light-reflecting ingredients. The combination of powder and low-cal reflection can be an unfortunate double whammy for some older faces.
The Trouble With Total-Coverage Foundation
Uneven skin tone is a giveaway sign of aging. The obvious reaction is to use a foundation that offers better coverage. It may camouflage pigmentation, but it comes at a price!
If a foundation promises to cover better or last longer, it's also going to be heavier or at least, stickier. That means it'southward most certain to settle into lines more.
Gyre to Proceed
Read More From Bellatory
So, if you lot're trying a foundation or concealer, don't judge past how it looks when you put it on. Look half an hour, then have a adept look at your face up in a skilful light (and, if your eyesight isn't what it was, apply a magnifying mirror!).
I tried this recently with an expensive foundation that promised a "dewy, historic period-defying, long-wearing end."
Information technology looked great at showtime, merely half an hour afterward when I looked in the mirror and smiled, I changed my heed. The foundation had settled into my eye wrinkles, and then when I smiled I had a map of the Nile delta below each eye!
Use a Subtle Approach
The sad truth is that makeup's ability to camouflage wrinkles and pigmentation is far more than express than marketing suggests.
Call up that even the heavily made-up models in the ads take been photoshopped to hibernate their flaws! I wish I could offer a magic solution to transform an older face, just I oasis't found one and so far.
I've institute the best approach is to plough the whole affair on its head. Instead of attacking with everything you've got, be subtle. Information technology may not hide every bit much, but people will think you're non made up, so they'll call back your vivid optics and rosy cheeks are natural!
Makeup Tips for Mature Pare
- Employ primers under makeup—it volition help even out skin tone and texture, and keep your makeup fresher longer. Primers are bachelor for the face, lips and eyes.
- Utilise a BB cream, CC cream or fifty-fifty a tinted moisturizer instead of foundation, or mix your foundation with a drib of moisturizer for a soft finish.
- Apply foam blusher (stick or compact), not powder, for a more dewy look.
- If you utilise concealer under your optics, pat information technology from the inner corner of your eye to the mid-point. If you use information technology under the outer corner, it will highlight your wrinkles.
- Use a highlighter simply under your forehead bone to open your eyes
- Every bit we age, our eyelids turn royal. A pale peach or gold shadow over the whole eyelid will counteract that and give a more than youthful look.
- Use a nude or stake pinkish eyeliner along the inside edge of your lower chapeau (like kohl)—instant sparkle!
- Utilize a lipliner to sharpen the outline of your lips.
- Never put mascara on your lower lashes.
Gear up the Fundamentals
You lot may be feeling frustrated that in that location isn't more you can do with cosmetics to ameliorate your look. But in that location is something else you tin exercise—tackle the underlying problems instead of trying to hibernate the issue.
At that place are means to work on improving your peel's status, rather than trying to embrace information technology up.
At that place are several non-surgical facelift systems that can bring back a youthful glow, and reduce wrinkles. My personal favourite is Omnilux Revive. Whether you have a monthly salon treatment or practise it yourself at dwelling, information technology'due south fantastic for evening out your skin tone and diminishing wrinkles.

beginning I thought I responded to this before but anyway, 4 or 3 months ago, I realized I simply tin can't use whatsoever foundation.and I was surprised a pressed pulverisation is at present a disaster, my skin inverse a lot, I was so oily when I was younger, but now face up seemed stale as some part and oily some. So Mary K was recommended to me, I tried to use them from the facial wash to toner, moisturizer, day foam and night foam, then the foundation is Mary K CC foam. I come across great improvement, because my peel improved a lot, kinda expensive only it is all worth it but I am thinking of merely maintaining the moisturizer and facial wash. I also observe the Miracle Finish series from the Face Shop, I call up this cushion presses pulverization is better as alternative to ordinary press powder that I used before.

Interesting to hear the chemic peel was worth it - maybe I'll accept to investigate!
The white complexion may non be but due to the chemical pare. As nosotros historic period, our peel tends to turn whiter and whiter. The all-time way to get color is not with your foundation, merely with bronzing pulverisation or blusher. Cull a delicate shade. Sweep it from your cheekbones up each side of your face to your temples, then stroke it lightly in the center of your forehead, beyond the span of your olfactory organ and on the tip of your mentum.
I think you'll exist surprised at how well this works. I used to use this trick when I was performing flamenco - my pare is pale, and for flamenco it's good to expect more Mediterranean. I tried using tan foundation but it looked like a mask, so I used bronzing powder instead - and even though I only used it every bit I explained above, it fabricated my whole face look dominicus-kissed.

Someone wanted to know about chapped lips and no mascara on the lower lashes. Lip balm is the mode to go, Nivea has a great lip balm and so does Aveeno and MAC has i if you lot're going high end. If you lot're worried most mascara flaking off your lashes, Maybelline's Falsies Mascara does not chip off. I've tried many mascaras and I'm 50+.

@Maria, that'south the downside of losing weight when we get older - it's something I worry about myself. Someone one time said, "as yous get older, y'all have to cull between your face or your barrel", meaning that a niggling fat on the face disguises the sagging of one-time age.
A facelift is the only real solution, but fillers could go a long way to improving things.

Cheers for the tip almost Physicians Formula blush, Bettye! Which tinted moisturizer do you wear at present? I'm in Australia and what works in South Florida would work well here, too (boiling climate).
I have to say, I've tried some of the "luminous" blazon moisturizers and I find they wait shiny and artificial on older skin - merely I'm e'er looking for one that works. Is it the Guerlain Teint d'Ailleurs?
Bettye K Jones on November 20, 2011:
Some of it is useful; however I CANNOT use a cream blush at 78; information technology merely disappears into my skin. Have found a flossy pulverisation blush that works well (Physicians Formula) and is actually in my budget since losing my job in 2007!
I use a tinted moisturize which works well in S Florida where I alive; but am looking for a more luminous look..friend tried Guerlain beds (mid 70's and looks great) I similar information technology; nonetheless, they practise not actually recommend it for seniors?????? Kate Swanson (writer) from Sydney on September 23, 2011:
Touch Tint was a cream eye shadow and so I'd stick with a cream formulation. I know someone else who liked Affect Tint and she is now using Laura Mercier Metal Creme eye colour - which is a fleck pricey here simply apparently a small tube goes quite a long way. Information technology does look dramatic if you use also much just you tin become a subtle effect if you utilize it sparingly.
MarquetteSam on September 23, 2011:
Marissa, it's too bad that the individuals who disagree with you tin't do it in a more than pleasant fashion. Healthy for non responding in kind.
I am 63 and am looking for an eyelid shadow to cover my somewhat blood-red and veiny looking eyelids. Clinique's touch tint for eyes in "soft heather" worked and then well, but of course it's no longer bachelor. I but bought Clinique's new hat smoothie in "Currant Affair" and its deeper imperial shade makes me expect every bit if I have black and blueish eyes. Do y'all think that the peach heart shadow you take suggested would work for this trouble. I'd similar to put it on kickoff thing in the morn.
Thanks for all the great tips that yous have here. I'm a showtime fourth dimension user and will definitely return.
Kate Swanson (author) from Sydney on September twenty, 2011:
@Becca, how lucky you are to accept wrinkle free skin! The loss of pigment in older skin is a big problem - information technology'south one of the reasons why hairdressers recommend going lighter with hair color.
If you lot try to cover the whiteness with foundation you're only going to reach a mask-like result. Have you tried using a light blusher instead? Don't merely employ it on your cheeks, you lot can also stroke it from the temples down to your cheeks, over the span of your nose, in the heart of your forehead and on the tip of your chin.
I have fair skin and when I accept to look tanned and exotic for my belly dance performances, I don't employ a night foundation - I practise the above play a trick on with bronzer, and it works surprisingly well.
Becca on September 20, 2011:
I am 65 years one-time and basically have contraction free skin because I have never sun bathed. My problem is that as I get older, my peel is bleaching itself and the once rosy color I had is at present so chalk white it is near colorless. The whiteness of my skin is so strong, that it whitens all the foundation colors I put on it. I demand a foundation that is dense enough to overcome the whiteness of my skin.
Any advice volition exist highly appreciated.
Kate Swanson (author) from Sydney on September twenty, 2011:
Danique, I'm sorry you lot feel that way. I'k a chip mystified about your comment considering I didn't say mature women have dried up skin - actually I have an oily T zone as well, only I still find pulverization is unflattering.
Omnilux, dissimilar some other and so-called non-surgical facelifts, IS clinically proven and I, for i, think they're marvellous - truthful, it's not going to give yous the same results as a existent facelift, but it work a lot better than whatsoever fancy cream or other treatment I've tried. And by the way, the blue lite version is absolutely fantastic for skin that's oily and prone to breakouts.
danique mitchell on September 20, 2011:
I am 50 and my skin is oiler than always - if I went without powder I would be like an oil slick! Non all mature women have dried up skin - your so called tips were just to sell Omnilux devices - which past the manner don't piece of work and are as much utilize as your tips!
Kate Swanson (author) from Sydney on September 06, 2011:
Judy, I recommend you try the Omnilux arrangement. Do it at the salon if you lot can beget it, or buy the Omnilux handheld device. Y'all may be amazed, I was!
Judy Mattioli on September 06, 2011:
Thanks for the tips...they all sound neat but many won't aid me at my age of 68. My peel has always been articulate considering I went through a lot of problem making sure information technology was clean and used very expensive mosturizers, etc. When I turned 60 it seemed everything went downhill...skin became deadening, brown spots started popping up (which are a real problem at present) and small cherry spots on my cheeks. Because of all this I utilise a lot more than brand-up to try to cover them upwards, which I find doesn't really work. I'm non sure anything can help me and I hate looking in my make-upwardly mirror. I'one thousand smart enough to know that I'll never look "immature" again simply I'd dearest to find something that would help my skin expect better. Just wearing a tinted mosturizer would never piece of work for me, I'1000 afraid.
Kate Swanson (author) from Sydney on August 12, 2011:
@Jean, I know what you mean virtually needing to define the eyes.
Accept y'all tried a photorejuvenation facial? They're not cheap, just if you are interested in your appearance, they tin can exist a real refresher. You tin as well buy a handheld version to employ at home, which works out at a fraction of the price.

I'm 71 and habiliment very low-cal makeup foundation. i haven't worn mascara for years because of the droopy-look and constant smudging. I feel like i need to define my eyes so i employ eyeliner on bottom rim only. i keep my face make clean and use moisturizers. although i however have wrinkles, i figure at my age, i've earned 'em. i volition try the tinted moisturizer you write of...and the lipliner likewise, merely because i don't desire to wait tired. Thanks for your very informative words of wisdom.
Kate Swanson (author) from Sydney on August 09, 2011:
@Willies, I identify with your comment! I'm one of those lucky women who looked far younger than their age for years. Then when I hit menopause, I seemed to age overnight - wrinkles seemed to announced out of nowhere. Thanks for the tip almost the serum, I volition check it out!
willies on August 09, 2011:
'thou glad to know I'm not solitary hither... Throughout my life (even my teenage years) I have always had a good complexion. I mean, here and there I'd get a little breakout, but zilch to write home about. For the most part, my adolescence was smooth sailing as far as my pare went...
I have talked about this with a few other women around my age (35-55) and nosotros all came up with the thought that it may exist a biological/hormonal modify that occurs for women at this particular age. At that place also may be a stress factor equally we accept a lot more to worry about and exist responsible for than nosotros did back then.
For my 40th birthday, my mom bought me a bottle of Made from World's Vitamin Enhanced Face Firming Serum, and after a few weeks, people were commenting that I looked less tired. They even asked if I lost weight, been exercising or on vacation!
Since information technology works gradually over a few weeks, you discover a bit of difference yourself, but the people who don't encounter you that often really observe a dramatic alter. Smaller wrinkles are smoothed out and disappear completely, while large ones get smaller.

I haven't tried Olay Revitalizing, Jean, I must give it a go. I love my peach eyeshadow but haven't tried pink either - another idea worth trying, thank you!
Jean Bakula from New Jersey on June 15, 2011:
Hi Marisa,
I concur that once our skin is older, less is more than. I have been using a light tinted moisturizer, and sometimes that'southward all on the skin. If I want a flake more, it's a cream based moisture makeup, like Olay Revitalizing. I've tried shades of pinks on eyes (again, not for everyday) and surprisingly it highlights them and looks natural. And y'all are and so correct with the No NO most mascara on bottom lashes. It never comes off! Nivea is neat as well. Nicely washed!
Charisse on June 05, 2011:
For those people asking about why mature ladies shouldn't use mascara on the lower lashes - information technology is considering it drags your eyes down. Well, that's what it does to me. Other than an eyelash tint, I put nothing on my lower chapeau. Even the slightest hint of color there instantly makes me look tired.
Kate Swanson (writer) from Sydney on May nineteen, 2011:
@WriteAngled, I like the Nivea tinted moisturizer also! I also quite like the Dove product, which is equally cheap. Like you, I go on coming back to these, because I seem to get the nearly compliments when I'm wearing them.
Krys West from Abertawe, Cymru on May xix, 2011:
Totally hold on the foundation question. I spent a while thinking that I needed full comprehend now that I am older, and spent quite a chip of coin thinking that if I bought quality (= expensive) foundations they would not cake. Hah! My solution now is to employ a tinted moisturiser. I've tried several and a fairly inexpensive one by Nivea works very well. I don't tend to clothing brand up very often, but when I exercise use the tinted moisturiser, lots of people comment on how "radiant" or "well" I look, then information technology obviously does its job well. BTW I'm 57 too.
Kate Swanson (author) from Sydney on Feb 18, 2011:
Actually ceebee, the author is 57. And yes, women over 50 do often "cake on" their makeup because nosotros can't see close-upwards any more, and don't realize nosotros're doing information technology!
In fact, the writer in this article nigh Twiggy makes the same comment:
http://www.dailymail.co.britain/femail/beauty/article-i...
If you've found a foundation that doesn't settle into wrinkles all the same can even out mature skin tone, I'd love to know about it and so would everyone else, I'thou sure.
ceebee on Feb 18, 2011:
I have care of my pare. I know how to apply makeup. I'chiliad not a 'Baby Jane'...and I found this article to be condesending, thank you very much. I am sure there is a foundation out there that can even out 'mature' skin tone. Practice y'all really call back that women over fifty just 'block' on their makeup to fill in wrinkles??? (possibly some practice, but most don't). Instead of telling usa to give it upwards, why ccouldn't you lot offer some suggestion for foundation brands that best even the pare tone plus 50 peel? Instead, this article emphasized how 'not' to employ makeup so in the terminate, suggest a face lift. How erstwhile is the author?? 22?

@Dagmar, cheers for sharing. You sound like y'all're doing all the right things. Good tip nearly usnig a cotton ball to make sure y'all've got whatsoever excess foundation.
I also clothing my hair longer because I need it long for belly dancing - but besides because I experience shorter pilus tin await harsh, and softness is what I need!
Dagmar on January 16, 2011:
Thanks a lot for your tips. I just turned 60 , and I consider looking pretty practiced for my age. Everyone that doesn't know me, think I'g in my forty's. I never apply pulverization. I but put very low-cal and thin, pencil eraser size dab of foundation on each cheek and brow (3 in all) and spread it all over. Then I dab off the excess with a cotton ball puff. It gives me a natural look. I still haven't given upwardly on pulverisation chroma. I outline my lips because as yous age, lips lose in that location shape. I accept never smoked, so I don't have those wrinkles around my oral cavity. I employ a beigey lip liner. I fill in my lips with a creamy either peachy or rose lipstick using a lip castor. I color my pilus blonde with highlights and lowlights, go on it layered shoulder length and have always had bangs. Mature women are stereo typed of always having short hair. Therefore, I keep my hair longer. I will definitely endeavour the cream chroma and lighter liner. I always employ dark brown eyeliner. Thank you again for your WONDERFUL tips! ...Dagmar
